Public art has remained an
essential aspect of human civilization since the ages. Greece-based Parthenon
is one of the oldest existing examples of public art that proves this point.
Talking about the current era, public art still holds a strong position despite
technological advancements.
So, what makes this art
form so vital? We have attempted to answer this question below.
Instrumental in raising awareness
Numerous artists create
their artworks around some social issues. Women empowerment is one of the
essential themes of various artists. Environment conservation is another topic
that sculptors focus upon while creating their designs. When placed at public
places, these pieces of art attract the attention of individuals. It might
become a topic of discussion among groups of people, something crucial to raise
awareness.
Encourages new artists
In the last few decades,
the youth has been less inclined towards art as a career. Better opportunities
in science, technology, and commerce-related domains is a crucial reason. When
the demand for public art rises, it encourages new artists to choose sculpting
or wall art as a career. Funding by the government is also crucial in this
regard.
Attracts tourists
The tourists from different
countries or even different Indian states find public art quite appealing.
Especially for foreign tourists, it is a medium to understand the local culture
better. Various art pieces are often accompanied by a detailed description that
talks about its cultural and historical significance. This information enables
travelers to get a better idea of the art and the local culture as a whole.
A way to recycle waste
Waste disposal is a massive
challenge for both government agencies and local communities. For several
artists, plastic and other forms of waste are raw materials to create beautiful
art pieces. Some of the artworks specifically highlight the repercussions of
plastic use. For example, an artwork titled ‘Plastic Kouros’ by Anu Jindal used
PET bottles to show how plastic waste impacts humans. Waste to Wonders Park is
another prominent example in which 150 tons of scrap was used to build replicas
of seven wonders of the world.
Helps local communities
Apart from encouraging more
artists to work as professional sculptors, public art also helps local
communities. With the involvement of helpers, welders, and local artisans, the
local economy gets a boost. The businesses also benefit from the supply of raw
materials and tools.
Contributions by Neeraj Gupta
Delhi-based renowned
sculptor artist Neeraj Gupta put in various efforts to enhance the scene of
public art. He has recommended the effective utilization of funds for public
art through a proposal shared to the Urban Art Commission of Delhi. As per Mr
Gupta, the artworks could be installed in locations like the exit/entry points
of the airport, exteriors of shopping malls and the lawns under the major
flyovers.
